BREAKFASTCLUB is an intimate meeting with an artistic proposal and with each other. During a meeting at an unusual time with a snack and a drink as a binding factor, other ways of sharing, looking and experiencing become possible. Gouvernement’s concept combines artists’ presentation moments with a moderated conversation on the themes evoked by the works on show.
In the context of De Schone Week of the Art Sciences students at Ghent University, BREAKFASTCLUB #12 wonders what the potential of semi-public space could be.
As the University seeks to transform the T4 building from machine hall to semi-public space, we ponder what that kind of space means, but more importantly what it could offer and for whom? From an artistic perspective, we look at what a semi-public space in the city can be and become.
Two short artistic interventions lead to a moderated conversation in which panelists and audience interact. We start with an excerpt from scenographer Jozef Wouters’ performance The Soft Layer, in which spoken text evokes the 17th-century Ottoman palace where the performance originated. That temporary imagined courtyard, plopping down across the courtyard of Campus Rommelaere, raises the question of whether a renovation can also add layers rather than remove them. Next, Ingel Vaikla screens The House Guard (2015), in which we follow a caretaker through his daily activities in the Estonian arena Linnahall, which has been closed since 2009. The dialogue between the building and its keeper shows how their future (images) are intertwined and how the desires for preservation and renewal clash.
Niels Coppens, Biniam Faelens, Jana Vasiljević & Anthony Tawil join the conversation afterwards, moderated by Firas El Hallak.
