After having completed a study in design at ArtEZ in Arnhem, de Tilburg-born and raised Mirte van Duppen decided to continu Graphic Design studies at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. A (video) artist, van Duppen draws inspiration from functions, relations and transformations of (urban) landscapes and the interactions of human kind with its surroundings. Both reality as well as imaginary elements are instrumentalized for an analysis and composition of an area. In a very intuitive yet precise way, she translates landscapes into stationary, photographic-like film images, consequently allowing the spectator to enter her view upon the world.

With previous work experiences in various places, from the small Icelandic village Seyðisfjörður to touristy Bruges, van Duppen now embraces the eclectic landscape of Kerkbrugge-Langerbrugge. ‘De Ijzeren Boomgaard’ (‘The Iron Orchard’) is shot during a three weeks artist residency in the microcosmos of the port-village 15 kilometers North of Ghent, Belgium. It’s a 21st century fairy tale based on stories, anecdotes and memories told by inhabitants. The voice of ‘Wolf’, who is the narrator of the tale, takes you on a trip in the surroundings, through history and along fragments of everyday life. ‘De Ijzeren Boomgaard’ turned out to be a personal portrait of a landscape, in which reality and fiction get intertwined. This remarkable video-installation shows the local environment: ‘how it once was, now is en might be once be’.
