Monica Ruiz Loyola navigates between Mexico (her country of birth), Ghent (her current place of residence) and wherever her practice leads her to. After having studied Art and Design at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), she chose to continue multimedia and digital arts, which got translated in a scholarship for a Master in Digital Arts at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. In her symbiosis of art and technology, she ponders on the reflection between the analogue and digital as well as on the memory, life and death. These subjects are combined and embodied on different levels through interactive installations and performances, allowing us to both retrieve our role in this world and asserting personal and even social issues.
The search for Langerbrugge’s identity encompasses the main thread of her residency. Initially entitled ‘Mechanical reconstruction of the memory. An image against oblivion,’ her research scrutinizes the history and memories of objects and images – Marcel Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu instantly springs to mind. Ruiz Loyola concentrates on collecting those mental associations, stories, objects, and photographs – things that tie together the local residents of Kerkbrugge-Langerbrugge with the history and life of the electricity plant.
Monica Ruiz Loyola laveert tussen Mexico (haar land van afkomst), Gent (haar huidige verblijfsplek) en daar waar haar praktijk haar leidt. Na een opleiding Kunst en Design aan de National Autonomous Univerisity of Mexico (UNAM), koos Monica voor multimedia en digitale kunst, wat zich later vertaalde in een beurs om een Master in Digital Arts te volgen aan de Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. In haar symbiose van kunst en technologie richt ze zich op de reflectie tussen het analoge en digitale, alsook op het geheugen, het leven en de dood. Via interactieve installaties en performances worden die onderwerpen telkens op verschillende manieren samengevoegd en belichaamd, om zo onze rol in de wereld te achterhalen en persoonlijke tot zelfs sociale problemen te vertolken.
De zoektocht naar de identiteit van Langerbrugge behelst de rode draad in haar residentie. Voorlopig gedoopt ‘Mechanische reconstructie van het geheugen. Het beeld tegen de vergetelheid’, focust haar onderzoek op de geschiedenis en herinneringen van objecten en afbeeldingen – de associatie met de klassieker A la recherche du temps perdu van Marcel Proust dient zich hier dan ook spontaan aan. Ruiz Loyola concentreert zich op de verzameling van zulke mentale connecties, verhalen, objecten en foto’s die inwoners van Kerkbrugge-Langerbrugge hechten met de geschiedenis van en het leven rond de oude elektriciteitscentrale.
