Radical Hope

Stef Van Looveren’s practice translates itself into video installation, photo and collage. Via these installations, he attempts to reflect on and dismantle the performativity of our human behaviour, primarily within the notion of gender. While playfully mimicking our social conducts along with visual culture, his works move towards a surreal gesture. In Radical Hope, we see that same approach come to life as 25 characters are living and breathing within six stages: Sadness, Anger, Desire, Happiness, Resentment and Terror. The individuals in the end are or become one, despite them tapping in on different feelings that form the basis for each one. Van Looveren is also both participant and creator: he’s one of us as well as a discrete overseer.
